Minto currently operates Minto Jamaican Market at 4024 Broadway. Operated by his family for over 20 years, Minto’s is a specialty grocery store that offers Jamaican staples like Salt Fish, Callaloo, Butter Beans, and Gungo Peas, as well as other Caribbean, West Indian, and African imports. Being one of the only authentic Jamaican markets in the neighborhood, Minto market has become one of the most popular stores in Temescal.
The popularity of his store recently enabled Cleve to open up Minto’s Jamaican Patties and Juice Bar at 1405 Franklin Street. Opening up this April, Minto’s has already become famous for its flavorful beef patties and fresh tropical fruit juice. Now, Minto’s newest restaurant is expected to serve authentic, full Jamaican dinners like oxtail and curried goat.
Minto’s will be replacing Ichiro at its 15th street location. Known to locals for serving chirashi style sushi, Ichiro’s was forced to close its doors earlier this year and at the moment its future remains unkown. Coincidentally, Minto’s new restaurant will be moving in right next door to Baba’s House, whose acquisition of the former Ramen-Ya space at 410 15th Street was recently covered by What Now San Francisco.
So far, Cleve has remained silent as to his intended schedule for opening. There’s too much work that needs to be done at the moment to define a clear timeline. In the meantime though, consider trying one of Minto’s famous beef patties, considered by many to be some of the best patties that can be found in Oakland.
