Gold Mirror Italian Restaurant has been serving wood-fired pizza and pasta dishes at the same location since it opened in 1969 at 800 Taraval Street. After many years of wear and tear on the building, the restaurant will close in the new year to get a facelift and update the interiors, according to recent reporting.

An article from Eater SF reports that Gold Mirror’s general manager Francesca Villani confirms the renovations, adding that the time spent being closed will allow its chefs and co-owners Domenico and Roberto Di Grande a chance to untie their aprons for a well-deserved break. It’s unknown exactly how long the restaurant will be closed, however, it’s likely to be a month or longer due to construction and permitting efforts. The restaurant is typically open for dinner service from Wednesday through Sunday, 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The family-owned business is helmed by patriarch Giuseppe Di Grande, who purchased the restaurant when it was a New Orleans-inspired cocktail lounge, described as “an establishment to provide the citizens of a growing San Francisco with a bit of fun, fashion, and time off from the daily grind,” according to its website.

Unsurprisingly, this won’t be the first time Gold Mirror has closed over the years to renovate. As its website states, “On April 19, 2004 the restaurant was forced to close, and replace, its doors when a runaway delivery truck struck the front entrance. While the restaurant was under construction to repair the damage, the original bar mirrors from Fillmore Street were uncovered to reveal the origin of the name. One of these mirrors can still be seen behind the old cash register at the end of the hallway, featuring ‘Goldie’ gazing into her golden mirror. Giuseppe had preserved the name with no knowledge of the art, and brought in an ornate golden framed mirror, which is still on prominent display in the dining room.”

The new renovations and updates are sure to provide a welcoming and bright atmosphere to accompany its authentic and fresh Italian cuisine, while still embracing the history that the site is known for. What Now SF reached out to Gold Mirror officials for additional comment but did not immediately receive a response.
