The restaurateur behind Oakland’s now-shuttered Japanese-American diner Hopscotch plans to debut a new restaurant at the same address — this time, a Japanese-Mexican concept, Good Luck Gato.

Moving into a reimagined version of the space at 1915 San Pablo Avenue, the eatery will soon serve alongside neighborhood establishments such as Belly, Plenty, and Shinmai.
The “izakaya cantina” — as the concept’s co-owners, Chef Kyle Itani, as well as Daniel Paez and Matthew Meyer of Low Bar, call it — will feature dishes such as hamachi tartare tostada and an okonomiyaki baked potato, according to SF Eater.
What Now San Francisco contacted Itani to inquire about the opening, but he could not provide additional information before publication.
For readers who didn’t have a chance to enjoy a meal at Hopscotch before it closed in June, the restaurant was known as an “upscale, retro diner serving craft cocktails & inventive American fare with a Japanese touch.”
