A passion project and an homage to their Mexican roots, Tal Palo was born as a way to keep the Mexican traditions alive by owner Adriana and her husband, Aaron Porter.

“It is a hybrid all-day cafe which also serves as a boutique for retail items,” said co-owner Porter.

The seeds of the restaurant were sown in 2019 when the couple moved to California after having lived in Guadalajara, México for several years. Having been in the hospitality industry for years, the couple decided to take their experience in creating a more family-focused project and thus Tal Palo was born.

The restaurant is designed as an Antecomedor — an informal dining area with Mexican influences. With a small, vegetarian-focused menu serving delicacies like Chilaquiles, Molletes, and Pan Dulce, they want to re-create the experience of dining at home by using local ingredients.

The boutique will sell imported goods from Mexico such as clothing, ceramics, and jewelry. “Our aim is to highlight the design and craft in Mexico,” said Adriana.

“As a daughter of immigrants, I have always had pride in my Mexican heritage. This is especially important for me as a mother to pass on to my children. I want to instill in them the same pride, so they can continue to honor our history. Beyond a business venture, Tal Palo is a way to stay connected to my community and advocate for the people that I love,” said Adriana in a statement on their website.

“Ideally we would love to open on the Day of the Dead, so late October or early November should be the time to open,” said Adriana in an interview with What Now.
