The Ferry Building Marketplace welcomes Ocean Malasada, a Bay-Area Malasada shop offering a twist on Portuguese-style malasadas, a popular Hawaiian treat and newest addition to the Ferry Building. On July 11th, Ocean Malasada made its debut, adding to the versatile portfolio of Ferry Building merchants. Malasadas, originating from the Azores, are yeast-leavened fried dough rolled in sugar. Introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in the 19th century, the treats boast a rich, eggy dough.

Drawing inspiration from his Filipino and Hawaiian cultural influence, owner Randy Santos embarked on a quest to elevate a dessert deeply woven into the rich culinary fabric of his ancestry, naming the concept “Ocean” to exemplify his yearning for a connection to his roots across the sea. His journey led him to Malasadas, a traditional Portuguese delicacy embraced as a beloved staple in Hawaiian cuisine. Infusing his cultural heritage into the art of crafting these fried treats, Santos embraces fillings and flavors including passion fruit and ube, that pay homage to the vibrant tastes of both Hawaii and the Philippines. Santos exemplifies a family-first ethos as he works alongside his wife and nephews, appreciating every aspect of running a family-operated business.

“As a proud San Francisco native, the chance to launch Ocean Malasada in the Ferry Building carries profound personal meaning for me. This landmark holds countless memories from my childhood, and now, it’s a joy to bring my own children here. Being a part of this iconic space feels like a genuine milestone, and I’m thrilled to extend the Ocean Malasada experience to the vibrant Bay Area community,” Santos shared enthusiastically in a statement.

 A TASTE OF THE TROPICS

Ocean Malasada offers a combination of unique and traditional flavors that include traditional (plain), Guava, Ube, Lilikoi (passion fruit), and Haupia (coconut pudding).

BRINGING THE ALOHA SPIRIT TO THE FERRY BUILDING

The Ferry Building is thrilled to welcome Ocean Malasada, its only doughnut location, marking a distinctive addition to the Marketplace and contributing to the diverse array of culinary delights available to the Bay Area community.

“We extend a warm welcome to Randy and the Ocean Malasada team as they join our community of wonderful merchants at the Ferry Building. We can’t wait for our patrons to have the opportunity to enjoy this exciting addition to our dessert landscape,” said Emily Rogan, Property Manager at the Ferry Building.

Ocean Malasadas prime location at suite K1 at the Ferry Building will be open Monday – Saturday from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm and Sundays from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.
