This summer a new wine bar, tentatively named Slug, is coming to 102 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland, SF Chronicle reports. Slug is brought to us by chef Andres Giraldo Florez, who opened Snail Bar in Temescal last year to much success.

Snail Bar is known for serving comfort foods, such as a ham and cheese sandwich made with Gruyère, Comte, and King’s Hawaiian Bread, and a curated selection of natural wines at $12 a glass. “Snail Bar is too small as it is — we’re finding ourselves with 3- to 4-hour wait times,” Florez tells the Chronicle.
In order to serve more people and continue to make his offerings accessible to all, Florez signed a lease for the current Downtown Wine Merchants space. Slug’s menu will consist of that delicious ham and cheese plus other small bites, and Florez’s handpicked selection of natural wines from around the world.
The lease also comes with a cabaret license, which Florez intends to utilize by installing a DJ booth and a brand new sound system. He hopes that Slug will revitalize the late-night scene in downtown Oakland. Florez anticipates a July opening.
