According to a recent report by San Francisco Chronicle, the families share a long history — Zanze’s father was once an employee at Original Joe’s, Original Joe’s Founder Tony Rodin used to babysit Zanze, and at the cake shop’s opening, John and Elena Duggan’s mother helped out by taking calls.

“We want to be able to respect and pay homage and carry on his life’s work very much the same that we did with my grandfather,” Elena Duggan tells the Chronicle.

Since 1979, Zanze has been serving his cheesecake — true to a recipe passed down from his father — to the Bay Area. He shares, “It’s a bittersweet time. But these people are good people… Whatever they do, they want to do it the right way.”

Once Zanze helps the Duggans master making the cheesecake, they will be offered at Little Original Joe’s, and at Original Joe’s locations in Daly City, San Francisco, and Walnut Creek.
