Pink Owl Coffee opened their first cafe in San Rafael in February of 2020, just one month before the COVID-19 pandemic delivered a nearly fatal blow to the restaurant industry. But owners Joe Carlo and Saandra Bowlus persevered, and are now about to open their second coffee shop in Petaluma.

The space, once occupied by another coffee shop, is located in the parking lot of Whole Foods, at 609-617 E Washington Street, and Joe and Saandra plan to have it up and running by May 1st.

“We love the area. Our kids live there, and we’re excited to join and support such a vibrant, beautiful community,” Saandra said. And Pink Owl is all about support. Not only does a portion of its proceeds go to breast cancer research (Bowlus is a survivor), but Joe and Saandra buy all of their beans fair-trade, and even work directly with four single-plantation farmers to produce their high-quality coffee. According to Saandra, “It’s important to take care of the customers and the community, but you also need to make sure your farmers are taken care of.”

It’s safe to say a latte from Pink Owl benefits more than just your tastebuds. And once the shop passes inspection, you can order one and see for yourself. Until then, you can go to their San Rafael location, or check them out on Instagram
