New Oaxacan Restaurant To Take Over Foxsister

Good news is coming to Mission District residents in dire need of some good food. A brand new Mexican restaurant will be moving in to 3161 24th Street, replacing Foxsister, which previously occupied the space.

Foxsister was a popular Korean restaurant founded in 2017. Specializing in fried chicken with Korean inspired glazes, Foxsister became a happening spot in the community thanks to their famous boozy slushies and craft beer selection. Unfortunately, Foxsister was forced to shut its doors last year and hasn’t been able to recover from the effects of the global pandemic. The space has remained vacant since and locals have been patiently waiting to find out what would be coming in its stead.

Thankfully the wait is over and a brand new restaurant will once again be breathing new life into the space. The restaurant, called Donaji, will be a brand new concept from Tamalitos Catering.

Tamalitos Catering was founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Isai Cuevas and Alison Cook. Over the years they steadily built a reputation for selling high-quality and organic tamales at pop-up shops across festivals and farmers markets. They soon became a staple lunch for local tech workers, who would have thousands of their signature tamales delivered to offices across San Francisco. Unfortunately for the couple though, the sharp decline in office work brought on by the recent pandemic presented a serious challenge to their business model.

Pivoting into a full time restaurant, the Tamalitos team are finally ready to open their first brick-and-mortar location. Named after the myth of a Zapotec Princess, Donaji is expected to bring authentic Oaxacan cuisine to a new audience.

Cuevas, who was born in Zimatlan, Oaxaca, has dedicated much of his life to making the best tamales that can be found in the Bay Area. Incredibly passionate about the cuisine of his home, Cuevas is sure to wow residents with his latest venture.
