Mother Tongue Coffee, “a woman, latinx owned company roasting fresh and delicious coffee in Oakland, California,” is opening its first brick-and-mortar coffee shop this spring. The business is taking over a space at 308 41st Street, near establishments such as Brenda’s Oakland, the cocktail bar Copper Spoon, and TrueBurger.
Anissa Cisneros, Director of Sales for Mother Tongue, tells What Now San Francisco, “We still have a few things on our final inspection checklist,” but that the location will open before summer rolls around.
For readers who are unfamiliar, Mother Tongue is known in Oakland for coffee that’s “ethically sourced and tastes great.” On its website, the business shares, “Mother Tongue buys coffees from producers we know and trust that uphold the same values we do.”
The company was founded in 2019 by Jen Apodaca, who has been roasting since 2005. According to the Mother Tongue website, she is also “a certified Q-Grader, former chair of the Coffee Roasters Guild of America, the 2019 US Cup Tasters Champion, and won second place in the 2022 Roasters Championship.”
