Montesacro Pinseria is planning to take over Karaweik Burmese Cuisine at 3317 Steiner St., according to a pending liquor license found in state public records. The first of its kind in the U.S., the Roman pinseria-enoteca opened its first restaurant in Mid-Market back in 2015. With locations in Brooklyn and Portland, owner Gianluca Legrottaglie is thinking of bringing his fourth location to the Marina

During the Roman Empire, peasants who lived outside imperial walls would prepare flatbreads called “pinsas.” Montesacro is noted for introducing the dish to American tastebuds, albeit with a modern twist using a unique, GMO-free flour mixture composed of rice, soy, and wheat flour imported directly from Rome.

Sourcing its ingredients from carefully selected local farms and small producers in Italy, the restaurant pays homage to the culinary traditions of the working-class quarter in Rome for which it is named. Legrottaglie says that while the Marina’s menu will be similar to the first three restaurants, there are plans to expand it a bit.

Until we get to see what those expansions will taste like, Montesacro Pinseria has licensing and paperwork hurdles to overcome, which is why Legrottaglie says that if all goes according to plan they won’t be open until late spring or early summer. In the meantime, visit www.montesacropinseria.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram for updates.

Correction: While Legrottaglie told What Now San Francisco in a phone call that he plans to expand Montesacro Pinseria to the Marina, he has clarified that nothing is finalized, so these plans are not confirmed.
