According to a recent liquor license application filed with the State of California, a family-owned restaurant named Mia is coming to Oakland. The business is taking over the former Steel Rail Public House & Cafe at 439 Water St. in Jack London Square.
Owner Alfonso Dominguez confirms that the space is currently undergoing a full buildout, so we can expect doors to open in Spring of 2022. Mia will be a fast-casual Mexican restaurant serving regional tacos, burritos, chilaquiles, and more. Recipes are currently being worked on by Chef Gloria Dominguez.
They applied for a Type 47 license, which authorizes the sale of beer, wine, and distilled spirits. Sure enough, Dominguez says the plans for Mia include a boutique-style bar focused on mezcal and tequila.
The Dominguez family are no strangers to the restaurant scene in Oakland. For 14 years they’ve operated Tamarindo Antojeria on 8th St., which many were sad to see close down in late 2019. Luckily, that wasn’t the end for these restauranteurs.
Dominguez says Mia, which is a Spanish word for “mine,” is a place that you share with people because it is your favorite place. Based on what we’ve tasted at Tamarindo in the past and what is to come, we’re sure Mia will be on our list of favorite places when they finally open.
