Magdelena’s will serve vegetarian and vegan baked goods, specializing in focaccia pizzas that will feature all plant-based ingredients. From house-made meat alternatives to cheeses sourced from Petaluma’s own Miyoko’s Creamery, Canton has created delicious focaccia flavors such as Korean BBQ Pulled Shrooms to Buffalo Cauliflower Blue.

Another menu item Canton is excited about are the sweet and savory rolls. Having perfected the art of the cinnamon roll, Canton has played with ingredients to create innovative flavors such as Golden Milk, Cheese and Soyrizo, Vegan Pesto with veggie sausage, Red Velvet and more.

Other menu items include Veggie Rice Bowls and Krispy Sandos made with local bread from Red Bird Bakery. There will also be a pantry area curated with a selection of vegan cheeses and plant-based meats, as well as organic or vegan wines and beers.

Canton notes that a huge aspect of her business is to give back and uplift her community. While a percentage of profits are set aside to support local charities such as the Redwood Food Bank, the Magdelena’s business model is built upon profit-sharing and being able to provide employees a living wage.

Canton worked for nearly ten years at Lagunita’s Brewing Company, where she worked her way up from Manager to General Manager before the brand was bought by Heineken. After the acquisition, one of the shareholders for Lagunita’s offered to help Canton with her business ventures. After one-and-a-half years of waiting, she is excited to open Magdelena’s, named after her daughter who is also a baker.

Once she finally gets the keys, Canton notes that there are some major aesthetic changes that will need to happen, such as hanging art by local artists and installing interior seating. The space is already equipped for restaurant operations.

While she aims to have everything ready by the start of January for a soft opening, the big reveal will happen on Groundhog’s Day. Whether Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or not that day, we’re sure the sun will definitely be shining down on Magdelena’s Savories & Sweets.

Correction: This article has been updated with the correct names for the menu items. An earlier version also implied that Canton was the GM at Lagunita’s for ten years, when she was promoted to GM in the last few years that she worked there.
